Men's Cross Country Places Fourth at Main Line Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's cross country team finished fourth in the seven team field Friday evening at the Main Line Invitational hosted on the Alumni Cross Country Course. The Fords scored 95 points and were edged out by only Division I competitors Penn, Villanova, and La Salle. Running on its home course, Haverford notched wins over rival Swarthmore and Division I Temple.

Charlie Marquardt was the top non-Penn and non-Villanova runner in the field as he out kicked La Salle's top finisher to earn a 10th place finish in a time of 19:50. Although Marquardt found himself close to the lead pack, his teammates did not trail far behind as the spread was under one minute between Marquardt and the Fords' seventh runner across the line.

Michael Brier (20:16), Nicholas Gandolfo-Lucia (20:18), and Jimmy Gorman (20:28) all ranked among the top 30 finishers in the field of 150 runners. Haverford's second through fourth finishers completed the four mile course with placements of 22nd, 25th, and 29th overall.

Haverford rounded out the scoring and displacement finishers with three more runners among the top 40. Henry Woods ran to a 35th place finish in a time of 20:38. Sam Fujimori was 37th overall with a time of 20:39, while Ian Steller crossed the line just behind his teammate with a time of 20:41.

In total, the Fords' contingent of 33 runners had 16 finishers in the top half of the field. Graham Peet was in the top third with a 42nd place finish following a time of 20:46. Charlie Hale just missed the top third of the field with a time of 20:57, placing 51st overall. Ryan Herlihy, Jeff Duncan, Michael Schach, and Matt Willig were also among the top 70 finishers on the afternoon.

After the Alumni Open and today's Main Line Invitational, the Fords will head out on the road for the first time this season when they travel to the Paul Short Run on Lehigh University's campus. The race will take place on Friday, October 2 with the men starting at 11 a.m.
