Haverford's CoSIDA Academic All-America History

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College men's cross country and track & field junior Dylan Gearinger and senior Henry Woods were each named to the 2018 Google Cloud All-America Division III teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced in a release on Tuesday afternoon. Gearinger picked up second-team honors while Woods was named to the national third team. The pair of selections were the first for the Haverford athletic department since the 2015-16 season and represent the first time that two Haverford student-athletes have been selected in the same academic year.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

Gearinger, a psychology major, capped an outstanding junior campaign with Mideast Region Track Athlete of the Year honors for the outdoor season. The indoor 3,000-meter national champion emerged as one of the top distance runners in the nation in his junior campaign. Gearinger captured both the 5,000-meter and 10,000 meter titles at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships, becoming the conference's Track Performer of the Year in the conference in the process. His outdoor distance double came off the heels of the Indoor Conference Performer of the Year designation and an illustrious junior track campaign that included four Centennial Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week awards and eight total event titles. Gearinger, of Berwick, Pa. also earned All-Mideast Regional honors and First-team All-Centennial Conference during the cross country season, twice picking up Athlete of the Week designation. He was also recently named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team

Woods, a philosophy major, finished his Haverford career with the Varsity Cup award given to the top overall athlete in the senior class at Haverford. Woods was also awarded a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship in March, becoming the first cross country honoree from Haverford since 2014. The New Yorker was an All-America selection in cross country for the second-straight season in 2017, helping Haverford to an eighth place finish at the national meet. Woods was also named the Centennial Conference Runner of the Year after capturing the conference's individual crown in October of 2017. A three-time NCAA qualifier in track & field, Woods has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team for the last four running seasons.

In the spring of 2015 Tommy Bergjans '15 (baseball) was selected to the third team while Sam Yarosh '16 (men's soccer) took home a first-team designation in the fall. Grant Scott was the last Haverford men's cross country or track & field athlete to be named to the award, earning the honor after a standout 2005-06 campaign.
