CLERMONT, Fla. - The members of the Haverford College softball team continued to swing hot bats as the Fords rolled past Westfield State University, 15-3, in five innings on Wednesday at Hancock Park. Later in the day, Haverford fell 8-4 to Bethel (Minn.) University in another non-conference tilt.
The Owls (1-3) scored one run in the first and two in the second to move out to a 3-0 advantage but the Fords quickly answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the contest. Kristin Tatum started things off with a home run to left field.
Haverford (8-2) was just getting started as it sent 14 batters to the plate in the third on its way to a nine-hit, 10-run effort. Tatum provided the big blow in the frame with a three-run home run down the left field line. Four batters later sophomore Jill Schnall duplicated Tatum's effort with her own three-run shot to left field. Finally, Jen DiCandilo added a two-run RBI-double to help the Fords put the game out of reach.
Junior Claire Fitzgerald, on in relief, did her part by striking out the side in the top of the fourth and Haverford added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to cap its fifth consecutive victory.
Sara Tauriello (3-0) struck out six in three innings of work to win her third game of the season.
Emily Mailloux (1-1) gave up 10 hits and 13 runs in two-plus innings of work in the loss.
The Fords looked to keep their winning streak intact against Bethel (6-4) in the second contest of the day but the Royals held on for an 8-4 victory. Elizabeth Newman went 3-for-4 while driving in two runs. Sarah Brody accounted for the other two runs in a 2-for-3 day. Surrendering six runs in three-plus innings of work, Emily Winesett (4-1) suffered the first loss of her career.
Haverford closes out its spring break slate with two more contests on Friday. The Fords begin the day with a 3 p.m. contest against Suffolk University before taking on The College of New Jersey at 7 p.m.
