LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Five members of the Haverford College softball team have been recognized as 2012-13 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athletes.
Jen DiCandilo, Dayle Comerford, Lauren Touey, Miwa Wenzel and Emily Winesett earned the scholar-athlete designation by achieving a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2012-13 academic year. The five Fords were among 18 honorees from Centennial Conference institutions and 931 in all of Division III. The NFCA recognized over 4,000 softball student-athletes from across seven different divisions for academic excellence.
DiCandilo, who has earned all-conference recognition every year of her career, was a mainstay at third base for the Fords last year as she registered new career-high marks in batting average (.392), runs (32), hits (51) and doubles (15) while extending her streak of consecutive starts to 109. The senior sits second all-time in program history in doubles (35) and home runs (11).
Comerford started every contest at first base for Haverford in 2013 and finished among the team leaders in hits, doubles, runs batted in and total bases. The junior is currently tied for third all-time in home runs in program history with eight and ranks fifth in the program annals in slugging percentage (.528).
Touey joined DiCandilo and Comerford in starting all 39 contests for the Fords and the shortstop ranked third on the team in batting average (.339) and fourth in runs scored (25).
Wenzel brought some extra speed to the basepaths as she made 16 starts as a designated player in her first year in the program.
Leading the squad in innings pitched, Winesett finished the 2013 campaign with a 9-9 record and 2.75 earned run average. Winesett tossed seven complete games and led the Centennial with three saves.
Haverford returns 15 players from last season's squad that tied the program record for wins in a season (26) on the way to advancing to the Centennial championship game.
