Softball picks up 2 more wins in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Haverford College softball team continued its impressive start to the season by registering two come-from-behind wins at the National Training Center in Florida on Wednesday night. The Fords rallied past Mount Ida College, 5-4, and then used another comeback to get past Millikin University, 4-3.

Mount Ida (1-5) opened the scoring with one run in the first but Haverford (5-1) struck right back with Lauren Touey's RBI-double that brought Jen DiCandilo home.

Claire Fitzgerald helped the Fords tie the score once more in the bottom of the third when the senior drove two runs home with a triple after the Mustangs had plated two runs of their own in the top of the frame.

Shannon McArthhur gave Mount Ida its third lead of the night with an RBI-double in the fifth but the Fords had one last rally in them.

Brittany Stevenson (1-0), on in relief of Fitzgerald, sent the Mustangs down in order in the top of the sixth and Miwa Wenzel delivered the tying run in the bottom of the inning.

Stevenson induced a pop up from McArthur to end a scoring threat by Mount Ida in the seventh and Haverford took advantage of the opportunity to win the game in the home half of the inning.

DiCandilo provided a lead-off double and Dayle Comerford, who led the team with three hits in the contest, followed with a single to give the Fords the walk-off victory.

Stevenson struck out two in two innings of work to earn her first win of the season.

Haverford completed the undefeated day by coming from behind once again to beat Millikin (3-7).

Elizabeth Newman got the Fords off to a good start when she led off with a single to left field. Newman went on to score the game's first run but the Big Blue answered back with two runs in the second on a home run by Raeshel Braden.

Haverford regained the lead with three runs in the fourth with the help of a two-run single from Newman. A bunt by Julie Garlick brought Newman home with the final run of the inning as the Fords successfully executed the squeeze play.

Newman's run proved to be the eventual game winner as Millikin added another run in the seventh before Emily Winesett struck out Alyssa Visvardis to end the game with a runner on second.

Winesett (2-0) surrendered six hits and struck out seven as she went the distance for her second win of the year.

Stephanie Wolfson, Sarah Brody and Newman finished with two hits apiece in the game.

Haverford finishes up its Florida schedule on Friday with games against Farmingdale State College and Juniata College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
