Fords blank Eastern, 9-0

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - The Haverford College softball team closed out its non-conference slate with a 9-0 six-inning victory over host Eastern University on Monday afternoon.

The Fords (20-9) reached the 20-win mark for the second consecutive season, and the sixth time in the last nine years, while the Eagles (13-16) suffered their sixth straight loss.

Haverford and Eastern traded zeroes on the scoreboard over the first two innings before junior Jill Schnall broke the scoreless tie with her seventh home run of the season in the third. Schnall's blast also moved her into a tie in the program record books for home runs in a single season.

The one run off the bat of Schnall would be all the Fords would need as Claire Fitzgerald, Kendall Chambers and Brittany Stevenson combined to limit the Eagles to just one hit over six innings. Fitzgerald (3-3) kept Eastern hitless over four innings to earn her 20th career victory.

An offensive explosion by the visitors in the sixth accounted for the final score. The Fords batted around on their way to plating eight runs on five hits while chasing Eastern starter Alyssa Welsh (5-11). Stevenson went on to send the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game early due to the eight-run rule.

Currently batting .413 on the season, Schnall finished with two hits and two RBIs. Julie Garlick, Jen DiCandilo, Kristin Tatum, Dayle Comerford, Lauren Touey and Sarah Brody also notched hits in the contest.

Haverford gets right back into action on Tuesday when it welcomes rival Swarthmore College to Class of '95 Field for a Centennial Conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
