HAVERFORD, Pa. - Jill Schnall established new program records for home runs in a single season and career as the Haverford College softball team closed out its home slate with a sweep of rival Swarthmore College on Thursday afternoon  in Centennial Conference action at Class of '95 Field. The Fords registered a 3-0 victory in the opener before completing the undefeated day with a five-inning 8-0 win in Game 2.

The opening game of the day moved along quickly as the two squads traded zeroes on the scoreboard over the initial three innings. After Haverford starter Sara Tauriello (7-1) sent the Garnet (9-22, 1-13 CC) down in order in the top of the fourth, the Fords (22-9, 10-4) took advantage of two Swarthmore errors in the bottom of the frame to score the game's first two runs.

Tauriello once again kept the Garnet off the basepaths in the top of the fifth before Schnall put an exclamation point on the victory with her program-record 13th home run of her career in the home half of the inning. The second baseman had entered the contest tied with senior Jen DiCandilo and Cassandra Searls '10 for most home runs in a career but her blast off of Sarina Lowe (1-7) moved her to the top of the program charts. Schnall's shot over the left field fence, the eighth of her junior campaign, also set a new program mark for home runs in a single season.

The three runs would be more than enough as Tauriello limited Swarthmore to just one hit over the remainder of the contest. Tauriello allowed just four hits overall and walked none in the complete-game victory.

Haverford received another standout pitching performance in Game 2 as sophomore Emily Winesett (9-2) shined in the circle. The reigning conference pitcher of the week, Winesett lowered her league-leading ERA to 1.13 by pitching four innings of shutout ball before giving way to senior Claire Fitzgerald. In her last 28 innings of work (five appearances), Winesett has given up just one earned run.

The Fords jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the nightcap with two runs in the first and three more in the second. Remaining aggressive at the plate against Swarthmore's Melissa O'Connor (7-9), Haverford added three more runs in the fourth on three hits.

Schnall finished 2-for-4 on the day with four runs scored while DiCandilo went 3-for-4 with an RBI-double. Dayle Comerford aided the cause with three RBIs in Game 2.

The sweep helped the Fords continue their push for a spot in the Centennial playoffs while also clinching a victory for Haverford in the race for the Hood Trophy. The Fords extended their winning streak to 23 in the annual friendly competition between the two schools.

Haverford closes out the regular season on Saturday with a conference doubleheader against host Gettysburg College beginning at 1 p.m.
