Softball Celebrates Senior Day with Doubleheader vs. Muhlenberg

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Getting to play on the Class of '95 Field for the first time since hosting the Centennial Conference Tournament in 2019, the Haverford College softball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday against Muhlenberg. The Fords dropped both contests against a Mules team that was playing its 17th and 18th games of the season.

Seniors Johanna Batterton, Allison Mackenzie, Emma Souter, and Nicole Swisher were honored prior to the opening game on Saturday. Souter's day was highlighted by a 2-for-3 second game as she increased her school record batting average to .395 for her career. She also concludes her career with a school record .640 slugging percentage. Batterton's day began with a start in the circle during game one and finished with a hit in game two. Swisher had an RBI single and came around to score a run during the opening game while Mackenize got a pair of starts in the outfield.

Despite a 12-4 final in favor of Muhlenberg during the first game, Haverford found itself down just one run, 5-4, heading into the fifth inning. After leaving a pair of runners on base during the second inning, Haverford did its damage in the third. Phoebe May started that inning with a walk before Mackenzie bunted her into scoring position. Kaila Uyeda then singled to put runners at the corners before Swisher knocked home a run on an infield single. Souter followed that up with a walk to load the bases before Abby Marquis cleared the bases with a double into the right centerfield gap.

Down by a single run heading into the fifth, Muhlenberg scored seven runs on five hits to put the run-rule into effect for the eventual 12-5 final. The Mules followed that game up with a 4-1 win in the second half of the doubleheader.

The Fords played a much cleaner game defensively during game two, but Muhlenberg's Cora Bridges pitched a complete game four-hitter and allowed just one run to hold Haverford's offense at bay. Three home runs from Muhlenberg's offense provide more than enough run support.

Trailing 4-0 heading into its final at-bat, Haverford put the Mules under some pressure as Souter started the inning with her second of two hits during the game. A single from Batterton and subsequent wild pitch put runners on second and third with just one out. Haverford got one of those runs home on the RBI groundout from Uyeda before that final runner was left stranded.

Haverford's four seniors leave the program with a .659 winning percentage over their four seasons. That success includes two appearances in the Centennial Conference Championship series and hosting the conference tournament on its home field for just the second time in program history.
