HAVERFORD, Pa. – Ten players reached the scoring column as the Haverford College women's basketball team overwhelmed visiting Penn State Hazleton, 82-49, in non-conference action at Gooding Arena on Monday night to register its program-record seventh straight win.
The undefeated Fords (7-0) continued their best start in program history while surpassing the previous program record of six consecutive wins established by the 1990-91 squad and matched by the 2011-12 team.
Penn State (7-4) went 5-for-9 from the field over the initial six minutes of the contest to stay close early. Two free throws by Stephanie Guevara tied the score at 16-16 with 13 minutes remaining in the half but Haverford proceeded to break open the game with a 23-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes. Five straight points from Brianna Robbins capped the game-changing flurry that saw eight different players score and put the Fords ahead by 21 points at 39-18 with just over five minutes left until intermission.
Despite a push by the visitors over the remainder of the half, Haverford still owned a 20-point lead (45-25) at the break. The 45 first-half points included 26 points in the paint.
Senior Rachel Baskin filled the stat sheet in the opening 20 minutes with 10 points, 5 assists and 5 steals.
The Haverford defense forced Penn State into 17 first-half turnovers and limited the visitors to just two field goals over the final 11 minutes of first-half play.
The Fords continued to dominate the contest after intermission as they scored the first four buckets of the second half to push the lead to 28 (53-25) with 15 minutes remaining on the clock.
A jumper from Robbins at the seven-minute mark completed another Haverford surge that provided the Fords with their largest lead of the game, 72-34. Freshmen Madison Skerritt and Darby Festa tallied their first collegiate points in the closing minutes as Haverford remained perfect on the season.
It was the second time this season, and sixth time in program history, the Fords surpassed the 80-point mark in a contest.
Baskin took game-high honors in points (14), assists (9) and steals (6). The nine assists and six steals were new career highs. Robbins finished with a career-high 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting while Nina Voith also reached double figures with 11 points. Juniors Shannon Smith and Pallavi Juneja each added eight points and senior Cara Wyant chipped in with seven. Juneja also dished out a career-high four assists as the Fords tallied a season-high 22 assists on 32 field goals.
All 11 Haverford players to see action tallied at least one rebound with Elizabeth Lynch leading the way with nine.
Alexis Daly paced Penn State Hazleton with 13 points and Maria Farrell added 10.
The Fords close out the first-semester slate on Saturday with a non-conference contest at Immaculata University beginning at 1 p.m.
