Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short vs. Scranton

HAVERFORD, Pa. -  The Haverford College women's basketball team lost to the Scranton Royals, 70-63, in a non-conference matchup at the Gooding '84 Arena on Tuesday night.

The Fords started with an early 7-3 lead led by freshman Samantha Wetzel's two buckets in the paint. Haverford's defense started strong as the Royals began the game just 1 of 5 from the floor. Scranton got its offense going by hitting five of its next 10 shots, including four of eight from beyond the arc. The Royals went on an 18-7 run before freshman Anna Schrecengost's three-pointer cut the Fords' deficit to four at 21-17 with 8:56 remaining.

Scranton expanded its lead to double-digits, but senior Elizabeth Lynch responded with back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 30-23 with 6:08 to go in the first half. The Royals kept clicking on the offensive end as they expanded upon their advantage, jumping in front 46-27 at the half. The Landmark conference foe shot 17-of-30 in the first half, including 7-of-15 from the three-point line. 

Haverford began the second half on a 5-0 run, cutting the score to 46-32, behind a basket from Lynch and a three-pointer from Schrecengost. The Royals continued their strong offensive game as they quickly pushed their lead back to 19 on the next two possessions. With Scranton up by its largest margin at 20 (56-36) with 12:46 left in the game, Haverford went on 15-6 run over the next nine minutes, making the score 62-51 at the 3:20 mark.

After a timeout by the Royals, the Fords continued to inch closer, scoring ten of the next 14 points highlighted by three-pointers from Juneja and Lynch. The Royals clinched the victory with four free-throws in the final 42 seconds to push the game out of reach.

Head coach Bobbi Morgan's squad outrebounded Scranton 37-33, including 14 offensive rebounds. The Fords also hit a season-high nine three-pointers in the game. Lynch led the Fords with 18 points and nine rebounds while Wetzel set a career high with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss. Senior Jacquelyne Pizzuto added in 16 points, six assists, four rebounds and a steal. Mesaris led the Royals with 17 points and Alexix Roman had 15 points in the win.

The women's basketball team fell to 0-3 on the season while the Royals improve to 2-0. Haverford continues its home stand with its conference opener vs. Dickinson on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team.
