Washington and Lee Records 69-66 Victory over Women's Basketball

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team couldn't hold off the Washington and Lee Generals, falling 69-66 at the Gooding '84 Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Fords used hot shooting from beyond the arc in the first half to take an early advantage. Haverford made three of its first four three-point attempts to jump in front 9-0 within the first two minutes of the game. The Generals responded with nine of the next 13 points, but freshman Anna Schrecengost's trey pushed the home team's lead back to seven.  

Washington and Lee got back within four (18-14) at the 11:59 mark, but Haverford scored five straight, continuing to keep the visitors at bay.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe cut its deficit under double digits, but a three-pointer by Elizabeth Lynch again pushed the Haverford lead back to 10 at 31-21 with 5:31 left in the first half. At one point, the Fords led by as many as 15 in the first stanza before heading into halftime with a 40-27 lead.

Haverford made seven of its 12 shots from the three-point line and made nine of its 10 free throws in the first half. Senior Shannon Smith led the defending Centennial Conference Champions with 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Jacquelyne Pizzuto also added eight points in the first 20 minutes of game action.

After trading baskets to begin the second half, the Generals recorded six straight to make the score 43-36 with 15:43 to go. Haverford followed with Schrecengost's third three-pointer of the game. Two baskets later, the Fords saw their lead balloon to 14 (50-36) with 13:55 remaining.

The Generals did not go away as they went on a 19-6 run to get within one point (56-55) at the 6:21 mark. On the next possession, senior Pallavi Juneja made a four-point play to give the Fords a 60-55 advantage. Washington and Lee quickly answered with eight of the next 10 points to take its first lead of the game at 63-62 with 1:43 to go.

Annie Gauf's three-pointer gave Washington and Lee a 66-62 lead with 1:01 left in the game. After a basket by Schrecengost, Gauf made two free throws to keep Washington and Lee in front by four. Haverford closed within two, but got no closer.

Pizzuto had a game-high 15 points and eight assists while also grabbing four rebounds. Smith finished one point shy of her career high with 13 points while snagging seven rebounds and blocking three shots. Schrecengost was also one point shy of her career mark with 13 points in the loss. Freshman Samantha Wetzel scored seven points, had seven rebounds including five offensive boards and a block off the bench. The Fords matched their season high with 10 three-pointers in the game.

Head coach Bobbi Morgan's team falls to 5-5 on the season while Washington and Lee improves to 8-2. The Fords host two conference foes next week with Johns Hopkins on Wednesday (6 p.m.) and McDaniel (1 p.m.) on Saturday.
