Women's Basketball Wins Its Fourth In A Row over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team defeated the Swarthmore College Garnet 62-53 at the Tarble Pavilion on Wednesday night.

Haverford held Swarthmore to just six baskets in the first half (23.1 percent), including just two over the first eight minutes of the game. The Fords jumped in front 17-6, highlighted by six points from senior Elizabeth Lynch during that stretch. Haverford outrebounded Swarthmore 27-19 in the first stanza led by freshman Sierra Berkel's six boards. Senior Shannon Smith added two blocks while the Fords created seven Garnet turnovers.

The Garnet got within 10 points on three occasions in the first 13 minutes of the second half before cutting their deficit to eight at 49-41 with 6:51 to go in the game. After the two teams exchanged baskets, a three-pointer by senior Pallavi Juneja pushed the Fords' lead back to 11 (54-43) at the 4:52 mark.

Swarthmore again cut its deficit to single digits, but Haverford pushed its advantage back to 15 by scoring eight of the next 10 points to make the score 62-47 with 1:36 left which put the game out of reach.

The Fords (35.9 percent) led the entire game despite the Garnet (38.2 percent) having a better shooting percentage. Haverford made nine three-pointers in the game, highlighted by three a piece from Lynch and Juneja.

Senior Jacquelyne Pizzuto had nine second half points on 4-of-5 shooting to lead the Fords with 14 in the game. Lynch scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds while Smith rejected five Swarthmore shots, snagged eight rebounds and had two steals. Freshman Anna Schrecengost recorded seven points and a team-high nine rebounds in the win.

Elle Larsen had 14 points while Jessica Jowdy registered 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss for the Garnet.

With the win, Haverford stands at 10-6 on the season and 8-1 in the Centennial Conference. It's the second four-game winning streak of the year for the Fords. Swarthmore drops to 5-11 and 2-8 in conference play. It's also the fourth victory in a row for Haverford over its Hood Trophy rival. Head coach Bobbi Morgan's squad will now have a Saturday off before hosting Ursinus (Tuesday) and Franklin and Marshall (Thursday) next week.
