IMMACULATA, Pa. – Behind sophomore Samantha Wetzel's second career double-double, the Haverford College women's basketball team ran past the Immaculata Mighty Macs at Alumnae Hall, 66-46, on Friday evening.

Wetzel set career highs with 16 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. She made eight of her nine shot attempts, which is tied for the second best single game field goal percentage in program history. Sophomore Sierra Berkel added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, along with five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Off the bench, senior captain Olivia Walsh shot 5-of-9, recording 11 points in the win. Haverford never trailed in the contest and shot just under 50 percent in the game. The Fords outrebounded the Mighty Macs, 39-30, and scored 20 points off of 13 turnovers.

The Fords scored six of the first eight points of the game and kept their opponent at bay the rest of the first quarter. Haverford started the contest quickly, making seven of its first 14 shots and held Immaculata to just four baskets in the first 10 minutes of game time.

A 6-0 spurt by the Fords in the second stanza put them in front, 22-14, leading to a Mighty Macs timeout at the 7:52 mark. Haverford's first double-digit lead came three possessions after the stoppage. The visitors went into the locker room in front, 31-24, led by Wetzel's 10 first half points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor.

The third quarter was where Haverford pulled away, holding Immaculata to six points. Five straight points by freshman Macy Goldbach put the Fords back in front by 10 with 8:08 to go in the quarter. After a basket by Theresa Walsh got the Mighty Macs within eight, the Fords' defense clamped down, holding its opponent to two points for the final 7:14 of the stanza. Immaculata got no closer than 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Haverford has won six of its last seven season openers. Tonight's win was the program's sixth victory all-time vs. Immaculata. Head coach Bobbi Morgan's team will travel to Elizabethtown on Sunday with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
