Elizabethtown Takes Down Women's Basketball, 47-43

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Elizabethtown Blue Jays used a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to defeat the Haverford College women's basketball team, 47-43 at the Thompson Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Macy Goldbach led the Fords with 13 points while sophomore Sierra Berkel added nine points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Haverford took a 15-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of game action by scoring six of the final eight points. Berkel and senior Olivia Walsh paced the Fords' offense with four points each. The visitors led the entire second quarter, leading by as many as eight points. The Blue Jays got within one on several occasions, but went into halftime, trailing 26-20. Goldbach scored eight of her 13 points in the second quarter.

A layup by Berkel at the 6:27 mark of the third quarter gave Haverford a 28-21 advantage. Elizabethtown responded with a 9-0 spurt to take its first lead of the game (31-30). The two teams exchanged leads before five straight points by Walsh gave the Fords a 36-32 lead through three quarters.

The Fords continued to lead into the fourth quarter before an Alyssa Aichele basket tied the non-conference tilt at 43 with 1:41 to go. Following a Haverford turnover, Emily Martin's jumper gave the Blue Jays a two-point lead (45-43) with one minute left. The Fords couldn't secure another basket while Rachel Forjan's two free-throws sealed the victory for the Blue Jays.

The Fords had 12 assists on 16 made baskets and captured seven steals. Three different players for Haverford had at least five rebounds in Berkel, Goldbach and junior Madison Skerritt. Martin led the Blue Jays with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Head coach Bobbi Morgan's team dropped to 1-1 on the season while Elizabethtown scored its first victory of the year (1-1). The Fords will participate in the Vassar Invitational with a game vs. Medaillle next Friday (Nov. 20). The game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
