Balanced Scoring Helps Women's Basketball Over Medaille

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – With all five starters in double-figures, the Haverford College women's basketball team took down the Medaille Mavericks, 72-47 at the Athletics and Fitness Center on the campus of Vassar College tonight.

Sophomore Sierra Berkel recorded her eighth career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior Olivia Walsh matched the game high with 14 points, going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Samantha Wetzel added 12 points on 6-of-10 from the floor and contributed five blocks on the defensive end. Freshman Katie Cook dropped in 11 points while freshman Macy Goldbach had her second straight game of double-digit scoring with 10 points. Walsh, Cook and Goldbach each had three assists in the win.

Haverford's offense started fast after back-to-back three-pointers gave the visitors an 8-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The Fords led by as many as nine in the first quarter before taking a 17-11 lead into the second stanza. A three-pointer by Cook gave the Fords their first double-digit lead (22-11), 49 seconds into the second quarter. Haverford expanded upon its lead as it held a 44-25 advantage at halftime. The Fords were lights out in the first 20 minutes of game action, making 16 of their 31 shots (51.6 percent).

Head coach Bobbi Morgan's squad kept the Mavericks at bay in the third quarter despite being outscored, 11-10. Haverford kept Medaille off the scoreboard for the first seven minutes and 10 seconds of the fourth quarter before cruising to a 72-47 victory.

The women's basketball team never trailed in the contest. The Fords outrebounded the Mavericks, 45-35 and shot 13-of-15 from the free-throw line. Haverford also made nine three-pointers and scored 26 points in the paint.

With the win, Haverford will take on the host school, Vassar College; in the championship of the Vassar Invitational tomorrow (3 p.m.). Vassar took down the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins, 62-56 in the other Invitational matchup earlier tonight.
