Women's Basketball Dispatches Bryn Mawr, 70-35

BRYN MAWR, Pa.  – The Haverford College women's basketball team did not have to travel far for its first Centennial Conference road win of the 2016-17 campaign, dispatching Bryn Mawr by a final score of 70-35 at the Class of 1958 Gymnasium on the campus of the BiCo partner Owls. Haverford improves its record to 2-3 (1-1 Centennial) while Bryn Mawr is now 1-4 (0-2 Centennial) on the young season.

The Fords used a balanced effort that saw three scorers in double figures. Junior captains Sierra Berkel (12 points) and Samantha Wetzel (10 points) joined sophomore Macy Goldbach (12 points) in reaching double-digit scoring totals in the contest. Wetzel narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds, all recorded in the first half, while Berkel chipped in seven. Katie Cook posted a career-best six assists and four rebounds.

Haverford started the contest on a 11-2 run, scoring nine unanswered after Halena Martin got the Owls on the scoreboard to tie it at 2-2. The Fords extended the lead to 20-6 at the end of the first quarter as Goldbach finished the stanza from the free throw line, knocking down a pair to wrap up the initial 10 minutes with six points.

In the second, the advantage stretched to 29-7 in favor of Haverford with Goldbach pouring in four more while Berkel and freshman Maddie Gallic also scored in the early goings of the period. A 5-0 run for Bryn Mawr, punctuated by an Elizabeth Chan jumper and a three pointer from Erica Dwyer, cut the lead to 29-12 and gave the Owls double digits with 4:40 left in the half.

Chan sunk a layup to cut Haverford's lead to 35-16, and the Fords called for timeout to re-establish the rhythm that had worked so well in their favor during the first period. Haverford fnished half on a 6-1 run as Amanda Quintero added four in quick sucession off the bench and Darby Festa beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper.

Goldbach led all comers with 10 at the half as the Fords shot 48.6 percent from the field.  The second half allowed Haverford to mix in some newcomers seeing their first action as freshmen Aleiyah Springer and Hannah Zoll saw their first collegiate minutes. 

The Fords went up by 30 at 49-19 after a Cook layup with 6:35 left in the third and finished the quarter up by 29 after an Anna-Sophia Capizzi trey made it 56-27. The Fords were up by as many as 37 at 70-33 after Zoll scored her first collegiate basket in the waning moments, and finished the contest with the lead at 35.

For Bryn Mawr, Martin finished with a game-best 14 points on 6-17 shooting while Odinaka Oranekwu grabbed eight rebounds.

Haverford never trailed in the contest and improves to 51-15 all-time against the Owls. Bryn Mawr last recorded a victory in the series in 2008. The final score represented Haverford's largest margin of victory in Centennial Conference play since a 73-36 win over Ursinius in Feburary of 2014, the year the Fords reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Fords return to action at home on Thursday, December 1 against Franklin & Marshall as Centennial Conference play continues into the final month of the calendar year.  Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Gooding '84 Arena.
