HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team powered past visiting Washington College, taking an 64-41 win over the Shorewomen at Gooding '84 Arena on Wednesday night. Haverford was led by Samantha Wetzel, who poured in 20 points as part of an excellent 10-for-15 shooting night. The effort fell just short of her career high of 22. Sierra Berkel added 11 points while Anna-Sophia Capizzi had 10 off the bench for Haverford. The Fords pull to 15-5 (12-3 CC) while Washington College falls to 8-12 (5-10 CC).

A Jordan Weir three-pointer with 7:37 left in the first quarter gave the visitors an early 7-4 lead before a tidy 10-0 run for Haverford forced a Washington timeout trailing 14-7. Katie Cook hit a three to give Haverford the five point lead at 12-7 ahead of a Berkel layup to punctuate the stretch. Anna-Sophia Capizzi hit one from beyond the arc to extend Haverford's lead to eight at 17-9 and the Fords ended the first quarter in the lead at 19-11.

With 5:51 remaining in the second quarter, Haverford stretched the lead with a 6-0 run to lead by 13 at 30-17. Wetzel hit a jumper, forcing the Shorewomen into a timeout. The squads traded buckets ahead of a 1-for-2 trip to the line for Caitlyn Clark, which cut the Haverford lead to 10 at 34-24 at the halftime break.

Clark also grabbed the first points of the second half, cutting the Haverford lead to eight at 34-26. Wetzel then floated in layups on back-to-back possessions to give the Fords a 14 point lead at 42-28. A Clark layup with 3:40 remaining in the third cut the Fords lead to 10, prompting a home timeout. Berkel completed a three-point play with 1:36 left in the quarter for a 13 point lead and Capizzi hit a pair of free throws for a 15 point advantage as time expired for the third quarter.

The Haverford lead would shrink no smaller than 13, extending to 20 at 53-38 with 7:23 left in regulation following an emphatic Cook trey. A Capizzi layup with 3:45 remaining gave Haverford its largest lead of 25 at 64-39 as the two squads were held scoreless in the last 3:20 of the contest.

Cook tallied a career-best six assists, adding six points on the night. Haverford shot 48.2 percent to just 33.3 percent for the visitors. Clark had eight points to lead Washington College. Ali Grundy had six rebounds.

Haverford returns to action on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. against Gettysburg (14-5, 10-4 CC) in a battle of top-flight Centennial Conference contenders as the race for the playoffs nears its crescendo. In the last meeting between the two teams, Haverford took down the Bullets by a final score of 60-55 at home.
