Haverford To Host 26th Annual Billy Lake Basketball Marathon on October 21

Billy Lake Marathon

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Join hundreds of area basketball players for a day of basketball, fun and inspiration at Haverford College on Saturday, October 21. Funds raised benefit The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter's research program to find a cure for Lou Gehrig's Disease and the Billy Lake Memorial Scholarship Fund at Bonner-Prendegast High School.  Billy Lake was a Havertown, Pa. resident who succumbed to ALS in April 1992 when he was only 42. His family and friends created this basketball marathon as a tribute to his courage.  The Lake/Quinn family has been fighting ALS for over 25 years, making this the longest consecutive family-run ALS event in the country.

Games will be played throughout the day. Coach Phil Martelli has assembled high school teams to play from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coach Phil Martelli, Jr. will be coordinating on the 21st. High School teams include Bishop Shanahan, Bergen Catholic, Bonner, CB West, Downingtown East, Downingtown West, Eastern, Girard College, Haverford High, Marple Newtown,  Montgomery,  Penncrest,  Scranton Prep and Shipley, Other games include teams of local players – men, women, boys, and girls.

The Haverford Women's Basketball Team, under the leadership of Coach Bobbi Morgan, participates in honor of former team member Dominique Meeks '12, whose mother lost her life to ALS.  Many area referees are donating their services to the cause.

All are encouraged to attend and support the fight against ALS.  There will be plenty of refreshments and some of the best basketball in the area.  You can form a team or donate at www.billylake.com

ABOUT THE ALS ASSOCIATION:   The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter provides support and resources for ALS patients, their families, and caregivers living in the eastern half of Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Delaware. ALS is a devastating neuromuscular condition for which there is no known cause or cure; however the first new ALS drug in 22 years, Radicava has just been approved by the FDA, giving us greater hope. The ALS Association is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. Find out more at www.alsphiladelphia.org.
