Women's Basketball Glides Past Immaculata, 65-48

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team returned to the win column with a 65-48 non-conference win over home standing Immaculata at Alumnae Hall on Monday night. The Fords had three players in double figures, using an inside-out approach to turn away the Mighty Macs with strong post play and accurate shooting from beyond the arc. Haverford shot 45.6 percent on the night, holding the Mighty Macs to just 32.7 percent. Haverford improves to 11-3 on the season while Immaculata falls to 3-13.  

Co-captains Samantha Wetzel and Sierra Berkel dominated the paint as each posted 18 points, with Berkel notching four rebounds and Wetzel adding nine. Wetzel also tallied seven assists, a career best. On the outside, Macy Goldbach connected on five shots from beyond the arc, finishing with a total of 17 points in an impressive three-point display for the second straight contest. Katie Cook again exemplified solid guard play with eight assists and seven rebounds. 

The Fords sprinted out to a 7-0 lead behind an early three-pointer from Goldbach and a jumper from Berkel. The Fords stretched the lead to as many as 10 at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter, as Julianna Clark drilled a jumper. A Clark trey with 4:48 to play in the quarter put Haverford up 13 at 18-5 and Wetzel hit a pair of shots from the free throw line for a 15 point advantage at 20-5.

In the second quarter, Immaculata was able to get the deficit down to single digits at 23-14 following a Theresa Kearney three-pointer, but the Fords quickly went on a 10-0 run to restore a 19 point advantage with a Maddie Gallic conversion from beyond the arc at 5:21 remaining in the half.

With 2:09 left in the half, Goldbach again connected on a three-pointer for a 22 point lead, and the Fords took a 24 point lead into the intermission following a Clark layup in the final minutes. Haverford took its largest lead of the contest at 4:59 remaining in the third, as Berkel sank the second of two free throws to put the Fords up 51-26.

Immaculata cut the lead back down to as little as 16 at 55-39 with 7:57 remaining in regulation, but the Fords were able to cruise with a comfortable lead for most of the night as 15 different players saw time on the court in the contest. 

Kearney was a standout for the Mighty Macs, contributing 21 points. Natalie Ayoub and Annie Kohutka each had nine points. Emily Halloran had seven total rebounds in a losing effort.

Haverford has now won its last six matchups with Immaculata dating back to the 2011 season.

The Fords jump right back into Conference play on Wednesday, January 17 against Hood Trophy rival Swarthmore at Gooding '84 Arena. The matchup, slated to begin at 6 p.m., will be followed by the Haverford men taking on the Garnet at approximately 8 p.m.
