Samantha Wetzel Repeats as CC Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year

Full Centennial Conference Release

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford women's basketball senior co-captain Samantha Wetzel was named the 2017-18 Centennial Conference Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, picking up the plaudit for the second straight season, the Centennial Conference announced in a release on Thursday afternoon.

The economics major and statistics minor from Sicklerville, N.J. repeated the honor, which is presented to a junior or senior member of the All-Centennial Conference team in each sport with the highest cumulative grade point average.

Wetzel was named to her third-straight All-Conference honor last week, taking home a second team nod after honorable mention in each of the last two seasons.  She finished fifth in the conference in rebounds per game (9.2). Wetzel is the Centennial Conference's all-time leader in blocks with 274 to her name and paced the Conference yet again this season with 3.1 per contest.

The forward finishes her career as Haverford's career leader in blocks (274), blocked shot average (2.6), defensive rebounds (620) and games played (107). She is eighth overall in total points with 1,008 and becomes just the eighth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

Last Month, Wetzel was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team. The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. Wetzel is the first member of the Haverford women's basketball team to be chosen for an Academic All-District team.

Wetzel helped lead the Fords to the second 20-win season in program history and the program's second berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Fords will now await the release of the CoSIDA Academic-All America team as well as regional awards which will be released later this month.
