HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team (10-3, 6-3 CC) rewrote the program's history books on Saturday afternoon in a commanding wire-to-wire 77-53 victory over McDaniel (9-6, 4-6 CC) inside the Gooding '84 Arena. The Fords set new program single-game records for field goal percentage (55.4 percent) and three-pointers made (13), delivering a scintillating first half performance that included nine buckets from beyond the arc.
Sophomore Julianna Clark helped key the offensive effort with five three-pointers, good for a second-place tie in the program's single-game records. Junior Anna-Sophia Capizzi poured in four treys while senior Macy Goldbach converted on three of her attempts from long distance. Junior Hannah Zoll found the bottom of the net with her only attempt from three-point land. Ball movement was key for Haverford, as the offense worked hard to find the extra pass or open teammate, finishing the contest with 25 assists, the fourth-most in program history.
In total, four Haverford players scored in double figures, with Goldbach and Clark each notching 17 points while Capizzi added 14. Megan Furch added 10 points while Zoll had an impressive afternoon off the bench, adding a career-best eight points on a perfect effort from the field. In total, Haverford added 30 bench points.
The Fords never trailed in the contest, opening up an 11-6 lead before eventually stretching that advantage to 19-6 with 2:17 remaining in the first quarter as Capizzi drained a trey. The lead would grow to 15 at the end of the quarter, as Clark connected from distance to beat the buzzer. The Haverford run continued well into the second quarter, with the offense seemingly firing on all cylinders. The 12-0 run was capped by Capizzi draining a three with 5:06 to play in the half, opening up a 24-point advantage at 36-12.
Clark again drained a heat-check attempt from distance, extending the lead to 45-16 in the final seconds of the half, capping a most exhilarating 20 minutes of offensive production for the Fords.
Clark added the 10th Haverford three-pointer of the contest with 7:07 left in the third, and Goldbach tied the program record with 1:29 to go, extending the Haverford lead to 27 at 63-36. The senior co-captain again converted with less than a minute left in the stanza, setting the single-game record as Haverford went ahead by 30. The lead reached its peak with 8:10 remaining in the fourth quarter, as Furch connected on a layup for a 32-point lead.
The Fords took advantage of Green Terror turnovers all afternoon, scoring 20 points off of 15 McDaniel turnovers.
A bevy of contributors helped stuffed the stat sheet for the Fords, as junior Maddie Gallic scored six points, added four rebounds, and swatted a pair of blocks. Sophomore Nyla Robinson came off the bench adding five assists and notching three steals. Senior co-captain Katie Cook was vital on both ends of the court, adding five assists and four steals.
Liv Storer paced McDaniel with 12 points while Caroline Ward added 11. Sara Pilkey added eight points and recorded a game-high three blocks.
The Fords will return to action on Wednesday, January 16, traveling to Baltimore for a matchup with Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m. The two squads met just a week ago, with the Blue Jays escaping Haverford with a narrow victory.
