HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team (18-6, 14-5 CC) swept the season series from rival Swarthmore (3-22, 2-18 CC) with a convincing 84-39 victory inside the Gooding '84 Arena on Wednesday evening. Senior Macy Goldbach became just the ninth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points with her layup that came with 2:07 remaining in regulation. Goldbach had a game-best 23 points.
Haverford tied for its fourth-highest scoring output in program history, stuffing the stat sheet on a night that saw four Fords finish in double figures. The hosts shot 54.4 percent from the field, the fourth-best mark in program history. Haverford's 11 made three-pointers was also tied for the second-best mark in Haverford's single-game annals. Junior Anna-Sophia Capizzi tied for the second-most three pointers in a single Haverford contest, sinking five of her shots from beyond the arc while finishing with 17 points, adding five assists on the evening. Junior Maddie Gallic added 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists in a spirited effort while first year Caroline Andersen had a big day, registering 11 points and collecting a game-best six rebounds. Continuing a season-long theme of stifling defensive pressure, seven different Fords recorded a block in the contest. Haverford held a 48-29 advantage on the glass, with 10 different Haverford players grabbing multiple rebounds.
Goldbach scored the first nine points of the game, single-handedly helping the Fords to an early 9-0 lead. The lead stretched to 12-0 out the gates. Swarthmore began to find a shooting rhythm, knocking down a pair of threes, but the Fords kept up the offensive pressure, jetting out to a 17-6 advantage with 4:45 remaining in the first. The lead quickly reached 14 at 20-6 as Julianna Clark knocked down a triple, and Andersen later added a layup in the closing minute of the quarter as Haverford ended the stanza with an 18-point cushion at 24-6.
The Fords cruised from there as the lead reached 21 with Katie Cook's trey to open the second quarter scoring. Haverford pushed its lead to 36-10 with a Capizzi corner three with 5:17 to play in the period, prompting the Garnet to call for another timeout. Goldbach had 12 points at the half.
The senior co-captain took aim at the milestone in the second, as she hit a trey to give Haverford a 35-point cushion with 7:24 to play in the third. Gallic then beat the buzzer with a triple to end the stanza with Haverford in command up 68-22. Goldbach added an early layup in the fourth quarter and a jumper with 5:15 to play sent the Garnet Valley, Pa. product to within four of 1,000 points before consecutive layups at 3:02 and 2:07 gave her the milestone.
The Fords have now won the last eight matchups with the Garnet, dating back to the 2014-15 season. They return to action in the regular season finale on Saturday, February 16 at McDaniel. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. In January, Haverford set new program records for single-game field goal percentage (.554) and three-pointers made (13), in a 24-point home victory over the Green Terror.
Haverford has now clinched a first-round bye in the Centennial Conference tournament, and will open play in the semifinals on Friday, February 22. Time and opponent for that contest are to be determined pending the results of the final weekend of conference play.
