Women's fencing shines at home

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's fencing team dominated visiting Drew University and Lafayette College on Saturday in the Fords' initial home meet of the season. Haverford registered decisive wins in all weapon squads.

In their first match against Drew, the epee squad scored a perfect 9-0 win to set the tone, while the foil and sabre squads had impressive 7-2 victories. Against Lafayette, epee and the young, inexperienced sabre squad scored 8-1 wins, while the foil squad pulled out a tough 5-4 victory.

Seniors Katie Elbert, Shannon Horn and Anjali Baliga, along with sophomore epeeist Juliana Petersen, were all undefeated on the day. Freshmen Diana Schoder, Sofia Tieze and Alexis Auer each went 3-1 while sophomores Elisabeth Hawthorne in sabre, and Leila Braun in foil, each only dropped one bout while winning five and four bouts, respectively.

The women return to action on Dec. 7 when they host Swarthmore College, Bryn Mawr College and Drexel University in their final competition of the first semester.
