Dominating day for women's fencing

Dominating day for women's fencing

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's fencing team closed out its first-semester slate by hosting rivals Swarthmore College and Bryn Mawr College on Saturday in the Andy Kates Fencing Salle at the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.

Haverford started primarily freshmen and walk-ons against the tri-co club teams and the event proved to be an excellent measuring stick for the Fords' less experienced fencers.

Even with two starters absent, the epee squad, bolstered by the addition of foilist Katie Elbert, went undefeated on the day, scoring a pair of 9-0 wins. Elbert's epee debut for the Fords found her touched by an opponent only five times in the entire competition, across six bouts.

The young sabre squad lost by a narrow margin (4-5) to the Garnet but rebounded with a dominating 8-1 performance against Bryn Mawr. Freshmen sabrists Sofia Tieze and Diana Schoder each finished 4-2 on the day.

Haverford returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 12 when it participates in the Penn State (University) Invitational. The full day of action will see the Fords compete against several Division I clubs including Duke University, University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and the host Nittany Lions.
