WALTHAM, Mass. - The Haverford College women's fencing team travelled to Brandeis University for the Eric Sollee invitational on Saturday.

The Fords defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) while losing to host Brandeis, Boston College, New York University (NYU) and Brown University.

Sophomore epeeist Julie Petersen led all scorers on the day with an impressive 12-3 record. The southpaw terror was bolstered by an epee squad that refused to lose all day, going undefeated as a squad against every opponent. Seniors Sarah Sofia (7-5) and Anjali Baliga (7-8) and freshman Alexis Auer (6-6), plus Petersen and assistant coach John Molloy, compose arguably one of the toughest epee gangs in the nation.

Seniors Katie Elbert (8-7) and Shannon Horn (10-4) led their respective foil and sabre squads with impressive stamina and determination against the tough field. Continuing to improve under the tutelage of Elbert and Horn are their sophomore proteges Leila Braun (8-9) and Elisabeth Hawthorne (5-10), who showed progress in focus, creativity, and power.

The Haverford women's team will travel next Sunday to Hunter College in New York City in order to compete in the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference team championships against Stevens Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, City College of New York, Yeshiva University and the host Hawks.
