HOBOKEN, N.J. –Members of the Haverford College women's fencing team competed in the individual portion of the 2014 Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships on Sunday at Stevens Institute of Technology.

The EWFC individual championships feature the top three fencers in each weapon from each team.The highest finish for the Fords went to Sarah Sofia, whose only loss on the day was to the eventual gold medalist, Katherine Couch from Johns Hopkins University. Sofia's 13 wins and one loss resulted in a second-place finish overall and first-team all-conference accolades.  The senior co-captain was also impressive last weekend at the EWFC team championships as she went undefeated (16-0) to help Haverford to a third-place finish overall.

Sophomore Leila Braun (10-7) and junior Jessica Poling (9-8) placed seventh and eighth in foil, respectively, to earn second-team all-conference accolades on Sunday. The individual foil event was a venue for the continued improvement of sophomore Julie Ta, who placed 13th with seven wins and 10 losses.

Two more EWFC all-conference second-team awards went to sabre fencers Elisabeth Hawthorne (9-8) and Leslie Tjing (8-9), who were eighth and ninth, respectively. Freshman Sofia Tieze won seven matches and placed 13th.

Competing in the separate Stevens Invitational, a competition for the fencers who are not starters for their team, freshman Diana Schoder dropped only one bout on her way to second place in the sabre.

Next Sunday, Feb. 23, the women's epee squad and the men's foil squad will compete in the United States Collegiate Squad Championships taking place at the University of Pennsylvania's Hutchinson gymnasium.
