Women's epee competes at squad championships

PHILADELPHIA – The Haverford College women's epee squad competed in the Fourth Annual United States Collegiate Squad Championships for fencing at the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday.

The women's epeeists finished at their initial seeding placement of sixth. In the first round, the Fords faced off against the Division I Eagles of Boston College (BC). The format was United States Fencing Association relay, nine bouts total. After two rounds the score was deadlocked at 2-all, after Sarah Sofia tied it up, but then the Eagles ran away with it to 25-19 until Sofia stepped onto the strip, almost pulling even at 26-24. Sofia was again in the last round but the score had stretched to 40-36 in favor of BC, in the first-to-45-touches relay match. Having to take risky actions in the face of impending defeat, Sofia was unable to overcome the deficit and the Fords dropped the match, 45-37.

In the placement round, the Fords faced off against the Bulldogs of Yale University, but dropped the close match by the identical score of 45-37, and wound up in sixth place of eight teams. Haverford next competes on Saturday at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) at West Point.
