Top 10 Tuesday: Women's Fencing Captures NIWFA D-III Championship

HAVERFORD, Pa. – It's Top 10 Tuesday! Every Tuesday from now through the end of August, we will take a look back at the Top 10 moments from the 2013-14 academic year. This list was compiled as a way to highlight one of the most successful athletic campaigns in the history of Haverford Athletics, both on the playing field and in the classroom.

Although there were many memorable moments throughout the 2013-14 seasons, we only have 10 summer Tuesdays. For a full list of all the highlights from this past year, be sure to check out the complete list of varsity highlights here. The Tuesday Top 10 will be revealed in chronological order.

Women's fencing matched its best finish ever at the 86th National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships during the 2013-14 season. The Fords finished the championship meet second overall in the final team standings behind Temple University. That runner-up performance earned Haverford the distinction of being the top Division III school in the meet. Prior to this season, the Fords last placed second at the NIWFA Championships during the 2008 season.

The strongest weapon of the day was the epee. Haverford racked up a 44-4 record in epee, led by then-senior co-captain Sarah Sofia. Sofia went 15-1 in the top epee slot, including an upset over Temple's top epee fencer. Juliana Peterson won the epee "B" slot with a 15-1 record, while Alexis Auer (second in "C" slot) rounded out the epee team trio.

In both the foil and sabre, Haverford placed fourth overall as a team to finish with a team score of 10 points for the meet. The Fords recorded 37 individual victories in the foil and 30 wins in sabre. Katie Elbert led the foil squad with an overall record of 14-2 in that weapon, while Leila Braun finished 14th overall in the foil. In sabre, Shannon Horn compiled a 10-6 record on her way to a sixth-place finish in that weapon.
