POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Haverford College women's fencing team traveled to the Vassar Invitational on Sunday. That competition was the first dual-meet format tournament of the season.

The Fords garnered wins against conference opponents Hunter, Yeshiva, and Army West Point. Haverford posted some impressive individual wins by seasoned veterans and wily newcomers as well, including victories against Division I powerhouses Cornell and Northwestern. The Fords' youth also gained valuable experience in hard-fought bouts against Vassar, Tufts, and Wellesley.

Co-captain Alexandra Morrison stood up to the Big Red in the second round, taking out two of her Ivy foil opponents. Freshman epeeist Brooke Garbarini also came through with an upset against Cornell. Haverford's win against the Northwestern Wildcats came from newcomer Julia Albertson in her varsity epee debut.

Anna Neuheardt had the highest win percentage on the day with a 15-6 record, while fellow sabriste Sofia Tieze was 15-8. Morrison was the highest scoring foilist, recording an 11-10 outing. Junior Amanda Soled, heading a young, but tough-minded epee squad, led them by example with 10 wins to her credit.

Women's fencing will next compete at the Dan Arnstein '09 Invitational on Saturday, November 19. That meet will mark the first live action of the year inside the Andy Kates Fencing Salle.
