Women's Fencing Begins Dual Season with Victories vs. FDU, Yeshiva

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Haverford College women's fencing team opened up its 2019-20 dual schedule with victories against Fairleigh Dickinson and Yeshiva while also dropping a hard-fought 14-13 bout against Denison. This weekend's action came during a busy eight-round battle as part of the Vassar Invitational.

Haverford's sabre squad posted four victories, going a combined 17-1 during Haverford's team victories while also defeating Vassar and nearly reversing the final score against Denison in the Fords' favor. Caroline Donado tied for Haverford's overall lead with 13 bout victories as she was 10-1 during the aforementioned squad wins.

Sofia Nicolayevsky, Maria Yea, and Megan Heflinger posted seven, six, and five bouts wins, respectively. Yea and Nicolayevsky both went undefeated against Fairleigh Dickinson as a strong 9-0 showing from the sabrists put an exclamation point on Haverford's win. Heflinger turned in her perfect round against Yeshiva. Macy Brooks entered the lineup against Denison and split her bouts in that round.

Golda Glasser tied with Donado for the team lead as she racked up 13 individual bout victories to lead the foilists. Glasser helped key three straight squad victories with an 8-1 record against FDU, Yeshiva, and Drew. Co-captain Zuyi Wang reached double-digit victories with 10 wins, fencing a perfect round against Denison while also notching two wins against Wagner and Drew. Ceanne Lyon went 3-0 against Yeshiva as part of her six-win day while Lillian Sweeney posted two more victories during that same round.

Sarah Blossom led the epeeists with 11 victories during a very balanced squad effort that saw five fencers post multiple victories. Maia Carvalho and co-captain Claire Cai finished with eight and seven wins, respectively. Cai was 3-0 against Wagner while Carvalho accomplished that feat against Yeshiva. Katie Bradley added four victories to the squad, including two as the Fords looked to stem the momentum against Denison. Yuqin Wu contributed two wins during the squad victory against Yeshiva.

With the first team competition of the season under its belts, women's fencing will return to the Alumni Field House for its only home bouts of the season as the Fords host the Dan Arnstein '09 Invitational this Saturday. Fencing is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.
