Women's Fencing Records Four Team Victories at Johns Hopkins Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Haverford College women's fencing team recorded four victories at the Johns Hopkins Invitational on Sunday in its final preparations before championship season gets underway this coming week. The Fords won all three squad matchups in the victory against William & Mary while strong results from the epeeists and foilists led the way against Lafayette and Navy. Those two results came just one round after Haverford's sabrists fueled a victory against Rutgers and jump-started a three-match winning streak to close the day's action.

Following a tough opening act against Johns Hopkins, foil won each of the next five squad matchups for the Fords. Golda Glasser went unbeaten against both William & Mary and Lafayette on her way to a 10-5 record. Nevertheless, her success was far from isolated as each of the five members on the foil squad finished the day with winning records. Hanna Kopits (9-4) closed her afternoon with victories in nine of her final 10 bouts. Co-captain Zuyi Wang (8-7) tallied wins during each of her final four rounds in the lineup, highlighted by a sweep of Navy. Ceanne Lyon (4-3) and Lillian Sweeney (3-2) also found success during their appearances in the lineup. Lyon was 2-1 against both William & Mary and Navy while Sweeney recorded two of her three victories against Rutgers after starting her day with a triumph over W&M.

Maia Carvalho's 14-3 record led all Haverford fencers and highlighted Haverford's efforts in epee where each of those four fencers also finished with winning records. Carvalho posted at least two wins during each of her rounds in the lineup. She got her day off to an exceptional start with a 3-0 record against Johns Hopkins before later besting all foes from William & Mary and Lafayette. Sarah Blossom (8-7) closed her day with strong results that featured eight victories during her final nine bouts. Yuqin Wu and Katie Bradley capped their respective days with seven victories. Wu won her last four bouts while Bradley concluded her day with a 7-2 record over her final three turns in the lineup.

Caroline Donado made it 10 Fords with winning marks as she led the sabre squad efforts with a 9-5 record. Her day was headlined by sweeps against William & Mary and Navy. Megan Heflinger and Maria Yea just missed winning records by a single bout as both registered four victories. Heflinger and Yea were each instrumental in the strong squad showing against Rutgers as they swept aside all comers from the Scarlet Knights. Macy Brooks added two more bout victories against Rutgers while Sofia Nicolayevsky notched a pair of wins against William & Mary.

With momentum on its side heading into championship season, women's fencing will head to Hunter College this Sunday, February 16 for the EWFC Championships. Kopits, Bradley, and Carvalho are all returning EWFC All-Stars for the Fords as they look to climb the team standings after finishing fifth during each of those last three championships.
