First half surge propels No. 5 Gettysburg to 15-5 win over women’s lacrosse

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team open Saturday's contest by scoring the first two goals, but No. 5 Gettysburg College responded by reeling off nine unanswered goals en route to a 15-5 victory in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

Haverford's (4-2, 0-1 CC) first goal came after blocking a Bullets shot and clearing successfully into the offensive zone. Josie Ferri then took it in for the score less than two minutes into the contest. Just over two minutes after Ferri's goal the Fords took advantage of a Gettysburg (4-1, 1-0) turnover and Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds eventually scored on a free position goal.

The Fords' lead was short-lived as the rest of the half was all Gettysburg. Marnie Commins scored her first of three goals on the day at the 25:18 mark. Hannah Church added the tying goal five minutes later and Lindsay Menton's tally near the 15-minute mark put the Bullets on top for good. Haverford was held to just six shots in the first half while the Bullets attempted 21.

Trailing 9-2 after an early second haf goal by Gettysburg, Alexis Bond broke the scoreless streak on an assist from Herrick-Reynolds with 25:26 on the clock. Church and Perrin Downing scored goals within a two minute stretch after Bonds' tally to make the score 10-4.

Gettysburg went on to score the next four goals to go up by 10. Kenny Likes scored with 3:09 left on an assist from Downing and Gettysburg added a late goal for the game's final score.

Leah Hammerschlag made six saves for Haverford while Laura McIntyre and Maddie Coleman combined to make five saves for the Bullets.

The Fords will face another tough test Wednesday when they host No. 12 Tufts University at 4 p.m.
