Fords edge Red Devils on Perry's 5th of the day

CARLISLE, Pa. - Diana Perry scored her fifth goal of the contest with one second left on the clock to help the visiting Haverford College women's lacrosse team edge Dickinson College, 11-10, in a tightly-contested Centennial Conference battle on Saturday afternoon.

Tallying her collegiate-high fifth ground ball of the day in the closing seconds of the game, freshman Amanda Fleming began the successful clear attempt that led to the game-winning opportunity by Perry. Fouled by the Red Devils' Kelly Haglund with one second remaining in regulation, Perry received her third free position attempt of the contest. Perry made the most of the chance to be the difference maker as she sent her 38th of the season past Dickinson's Grace Morelli.

Perry's goal capped an intense Centennial battle that was a tale of two halves. The Fords (9-2, 3-1 CC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes of play on a goal by Perry and Stockbower's eighth of the season. The Red Devils moved within one on a free position shot by Caroline Clancy but Perry answered with a free position shot of her own to restore the visitors' two-goal advantage.

Clancy deposited another at the 15-minute mark to help Dickinson creep within one again but Haverford dominated play over the remainder of the half. The Fords struck for two straight goals within a minute's time to take a 5-2 lead with 11:40 on the clock. Looking to regroup, the Red Devils called a time out but they were unsuccessful in slowing down the Haverford attack as the Fords tallied two more over the next two minutes of play. Dickinson scored the final goal of the first half but Haverford still enjoyed a four-goal cushion (7-3) at the break.

Kenny Likes' 13th of the year added to the Fords' lead in the early minutes of the second half before the Red Devils surged with four straight to close within one at 8-7.

Elyse Adler converted a Christina Gould feed to push the Haverford advantage back to two with 10 minutes left but Dickinson did not go away quietly. The Red Devils notched two straight to knot the contest at 9-9 with four minutes to play.

The action-packed final minutes of the game saw Perry put the Fords on top at 10-9 with 2:29 remaining before Clancy's team-leading fourth of the day tied the contest once more at 1:24.

Perry added an assist to finish with six points on the day while Likes chipped in with two goals. Downing and Gould also contributed a goal apiece.

Shannon Horn (8-2) made nine tough saves to earn her fourth straight win of the season while Morelli (4-3) finished with six saves in the loss.

Haverford takes a break from Centennial action with its final non-conference tilt of the season on Thursday at York (Pa.) College. The game against the 11th-ranked Spartans begins at 4:30 p.m.
