Dominating 1st half sends women's lacrosse past Swarthmore

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's lacrosse team scored 10 first-half goals on the way to a 16-10 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Swarthmore College at Swan Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet (7-9, 2-7 CC) tallied the game's first goal in the third minute of play but the Fords (8-8, 4-5) responded with four straight over the next four minutes of action including two from the stick of senior Megan Gallagher.

After Caroline Murphy pulled Swarthmore within one (4-3) with 20 minutes left until intermission, Haverford closed out the opening stanza with six unanswered goals including five in the final three minutes of first-half action. Junior Diana Perry deposited three of her game-high four goals in the flurry.

Swarthmore responded with its own surge as the Garnet scored three of the first four goals of the second half but the Fords remained aggressive on offense and kept the visitors at a distance throughout the remainder of the game.

Perry's four goals on the day gave her 40 on the season while Gallagher added three goals to finish her career with a total of 99.

Junior Hannah Morgan chipped in with two goals and an assist while freshman Sarina Manetta and junior Dayna Kim tallied two goals apiece.

Sophomore Elyse Adler registered a team-high two assists to go along with her eighth goal of the season. Christina Gould and Shannon Rafsol also found the back of the net with their 22nd and third of the season, respectively.

Senior Shannon Horn (7-6) made nine saves to earn the 20th victory of her career in her last appearance between the pipes for Haverford. Horn, Gallagher, Anne Cullen and Rosie Samide were honored in a Senior Day ceremony before the game.

Senior Corinne Sommi led Swarthmore with a team-high three goals while classmate Michelle Ammerman registered 13 saves in the loss.

The season-ending win added another point for the Fords in the contest for the Hood Trophy. Haverford clinched its 23rd straight victory in the annual friendly competition between the two institutions last Thursday.
