Occidental's Second Half Run Takes Down Women's Lacrosse

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Occidental College Tigers scored four consecutive goals in the second half en route to defeating the Haverford College women's lacrosse team 10-8 at Washburn Field.

Despite Occidental taking the first five shots, sophomore Sarina Manetta put Haverford on top, 1-0, at the 20:23 mark of the first half. Freshman Kate Sollee picked up a free position goal under a minute later. Occidental got on the board on a free position goal from Alida Beck with 17:41 to go. Back-to-back goals by freshman Molly Lausten and junior Christina Gould pushed the Haverford's lead up to three (4-1). After a goal by the Tigers, junior Annie Kelly and senior Diana Perry put the Fords in front 6-2.

Two consecutive goals by the Tigers cut their deficit in half, but Manetta registered her second goal of the contest with two seconds to go to give the Fords a 7-4 halftime lead. The Fords ended the final 17 minutes of the first stanza outshooting the Tigers 11-7.

With the score 7-6, Lausten's second tally pushed the Haverford advantage back to two, but the Tigers answered 29 seconds later to keep within striking distance. With 11:26 to go, Occidental's Beebe Sanders evened up the neutral site contest at eight and then Rebecca Reese gave the Tigers their first lead of the game 57 seconds later. Occidental added an insurance goal with just over five minutes to go as Haverford couldn't get any closer.

Lausten set a season high with two caused turnovers and tied her season best with three points and four ground balls. Along with a goal, Perry scooped up three ground balls and caused five turnovers. Senior Brianna Robbins secured three ground balls, a draw control and caused a turnover. Junior Megan Chenworth had six saves in the loss.

Sanders' three goals were a game high along with five draw controls. Mackenzie Wright and Sierra Slack put up two goals each in the win.

Haverford falls to 3-2 on the season while Occidental is now 3-3 overall. The women's lacrosse team will take on Colorado College on Thursday at 3 p.m before welcoming No. 7 Amherst (Mar. 18) and No. 2 Gettysburg (Mar. 21) to Swan Field next week.
