Women's Lacrosse Stymied by Muhlenberg

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team couldn't keep up with the Muhlenberg College Mules, falling 19-10 at Swan Field on Wednesday afternoon. 

It took just 39 seconds before the Mules got on the board with a tally from Casey Armstrong. The Fords answered with three straight goals from sophomore Maura Grant, freshman Molly Lausten and junior Christina Gould. Ten seconds after Gould's goal, Stephanie Umbach got the Mules back within one with 20:34 left in the first half. Armstrong tied the game for a second time (3-3) at the 17:54 mark.

The Centennial Conference contest was tied for a third time at 4-4 and a fourth time at 5-5. With 2:15 remaining in the first stanza, Umbach added her second goal to put the Mules ahead 6-5. The seesaw battle continued as senior Diana Perry evened the score at six, but Muhlenberg headed into halftime up 7-6 on a tally from Stephanie D'Ascoli with 41 seconds left. 

Muhlenberg scored six straight goals to begin the second half, taking a 13-6 lead with 20:15 left in the game. Perry posted two consecutive goals for a hat trick to get the Fords back within five (13-8) at the 16:54 juncture of the half, but the visitors put the game away with a four goal push to take a nine goal lead as the clock ticked under six minutes. 

Perry led the Fords with five goals, seven draw controls and three ground balls. The senior now has 162 career goals, ranking her fourth all-time, and 175 career points, the sixth most in program history. Lausten had two goals, two ground balls and two draw controls. Senior Nicole Sockett had a team-high four caused turnovers in the loss. 

Armstrong had a game-high six goals and three assists while Umbach had four goals and two assists in the win. Kiersten Mulvey made 10 saves for her fifth victory of the year. 

The Fords dropped to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial Conference while Muhlenberg improved to 5-4 this year and 1-2 in conference play. Haverford will travel to Dickinson on Saturday with the game scheduled to begin at noon.
