Women's Lacrosse Felled by No. 10 York (Pa.) in Season Opener

YORK, Pa. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team faced a tough challenge in its opening contest of the 2017 season, falling to 10th-ranked York (Pa.) by a final of 14-2 at Kinsley Field.

Haverford fell behind 6-0 early behind a hat trick from Regan Cook before Sarina Manetta got the Fords on the scoreboard with a goal off an assist from Molly Lausten with 10:11 remaining in the first half.

York tallied another pair of goals to go ahead 8-1 at the halftime break.

The Fords were unable to slow the attack of the Spartans in the second stanza, as York pulled ahead 14-1 with 10:56 remaining in the contest.

Meghan Fox added a pair of goals while Rachel Saks added her second of the day. Caitlin Rankin and Claudia Diventi also added multiple goal games for the hosts. Allie Gibbons took a pass from Kate Sollee and finished to give Haverford its second goal with 3:24 left to play in the contest, cutting the lead to 14-2 in favor of York. 

Grayton Downing scooped a game-high three ground balls while Manetta won three draw controls and Claire Cote added a pair. Rachel Romens made nine saves after getting the starting assignment in goal in the opener.

Haverford tallied 12 shots and won seven draw controls. The Fords recorded 14 ground balls, including 10 in the second half of action.

The Fords will open up the home portion of the 2017 campaign against Christopher Newport on Saturday, February 25 at Swan Field. The game is slated for a 4 p.m. start and will be preceded by the Haverford men taking on Eastern at 1 p.m.

The Fords will then host Randolph Macon on March 4. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. in the final contest at Swan Field before the Fords take to Florida for Spring Break showdowns with Kenyon and Roanoke in Port Charlotte, Fla.
