HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford Women's Lacrosse team posted its first win of the 2017 season with a 16-10 triumph over visiting Randolph-Macon on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Swan Field. Allie Gibbons had a career-high five goals for Haverford while Sarina Manetta added three scores on the day. Julia Manetta tallied five assists for the Fords in the win. Haverford improves to 1-2 on the season while Randolph-Macon falls to 1-1 in defeat.
Randolph-Macon got on the scoreboard first with a pair of tallies within the first two minutes of play, as Susie Snee and Alicia Hsieh found the back of the net. The Fords responded with five unanswered goals, including two tallies each from Sarina Manetta and Gibbons. Lausten finished the run with an unassisted goal with 23:08 remaining in the first, pulling Haverford to a 5-2 lead.
Snee converted a free-position attempt to cut the lead for Haverford to just 5-3, but after nearly seven minutes without a goal from either side, Julia Manetta took a pass from Kate Sollee and converted for a 6-3 advantage with her first career goal.
Off the next draw control, Haverford found the back of the cage yet again, with Sarah Svetec tallying her first of the season.
With 11:18 remaining in the half, Julia Manetta scored her second after causing a turnover and picking up a ground ball. Following the goal, Randolph-Macon went to the bench for a new goalkeeper, summoning Allie Walker in relief of teammate Jamie Langein.
Randolph-Macon scored with 2:58 left in the half and cut the lead to just 8-5 with a Saunders Riley strike at the 2:34 mark. Averi Gaines posted her first of the season off an assist from Kate Sollee with 39 seconds left on the first half clock, but after a draw control win, Haverford turned the ball over in the midfield. The turnover led to a Hsieh goal that made the advantage just 9-6 in favor of the Fords and bringing some momentum to the visitor side.
Haverford pulled it back to 11-6 with an early second half goal from Lausten and the first career goal from Olivia DiRienz, but the Yellow Jackets had an answer. Hsieh and Frankie Willing keyed a 3-0 run for Randolph-Macon who pulled to within two at 11-9 with 14:55 remaining.
Taking the reins offensively as she did against Christopher Newport a week ago, Sarina Manetta scored her 10th of the young season with just over 11 minutes to play, opening up the flood gates for the Fords.
Gibbons re-entered the scoresheet in a major way, adding a natural hat trick with three goals in a row following a tally from Maeve Gaffney, as Haverford took control with a 16-9 scoreline.
After a yellow card was issued to Randolph-Macon, Hannah Jones scored a man-down goal for the visitors to cut the score to 16-10. The mark would hold as the final score of the contest.
First year Julia Manetta had an impact on nearly every facet of the contest with two goals, five-assists and four ground balls. Her older sister, Sarina, tallied a team-high six draw controls. Claire Cote caused three turnovers.
In goal, Tatiana Lathion made five saves before giving way to Rachel Romens, who worked the final 16:28 of action, making three saves.
Hsiesh was the leading goal scorer for Randolph-Macon, while also grabbing four ground balls during the contest. Snee caused three turnovers and four Yellow Jackets had a pair of draw controls.
