Women's Lacrosse Glides by Randolph-Macon, 11-5

ASHLAND, Va. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team posted an 11-5 victory over host Randolph-Macon on Tuesday evening at Day Field. The Fords got off to a hot start, holding an 8-1 advantage after the first half of play. Molly Lausten had five goals to lead all scorers while Rachel Romens made five saves in goal, picking up her third victory of the season between the pipes. Haverford improves to 4-1 on the season while Randolph-Macon is now 2-3 overall. 

The Fords outshot the Yellow Jackets 20-4 in the opening stanza, putting 15 of those attempts on frame. For the contest, Haverford held a 30-16 advantage in shots at the final whistle.

The Fords tallied the first three goals of the contest in the course of under a minute as Lausten converted a free-position attempt with 23:08 remaining in the opening half. Kate Sollee sent home an unassisted goal with 22:28 to play and Eliza Brosgol scored off a feed from Maeve Gaffney with 22:12 left.

Alicia Hsieh got one back for the Hornets with 21:38 to play, but the Fords went back on the offensive, closing the half on a 5-0 run and garnering some breathing room with an impressive offensive display that included goals from Lausten, Rina Rosnow and Allie Gibbons. Lausten found the back of the net three times in the stretch, including a goal with 44 seconds left in the first period.

Lausten opened the second half scoring with her fifth goal of the contest and Brogsol and Rosnow also scored in the second half as the Fords were able to cruise to the victory despite Randolph-Macon holding a 4-3 scoring edge in final 30 minutes.

A stout defensive effort for the Fords saw Haverford cause 14 turnovers, including three from Madison Jones. Gaffney, Rosnow, Emily Krupnick, and Alyssa Sherman also caused two turnovers each. Four different Fords had three ground balls while Anna Meyers had three draw controls to pace Haverford on the evening. Randolph-Macon held an 11-7 mark in draw controls, but the Fords benefited from 33 Yellow Jacket turnovers.

The Fords were making their first appearance in the state of Virginia since a 2016 matchup at Washington & Lee. Tonight's victory was the program's first in the state. Haverford is now 2-0 all-time against Randolph-Macon after also winning the first-ever meeting between the two programs last season at Swan Field.  

The Fords continue game action during the Spring Break trip on Thursday, taking on Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. The opening draw is slated for 4 p.m.
