Historic Offensive Outburst Lifts Women's Lacrosse over Christopher Newport, 21-14

HAVERFORD, Pa. – In its 2019 season opener, the Haverford College women's lacrosse team (1-0) powered over visiting Christopher Newport (0-3) by a final score of 21-14 at Swan Field. The Fords were paced by senior Allie Gibbons, who recorded eight goals, tying the Haverford single-game program record in the category. Gibbons also had 11 points in total, adding three assists to her tally to establish a new program record.  Junior Julia Manetta tallied seven assists, also setting a new Haverford single game record in the process.  As a team, Haverford's 39 total points and 18 assists were new single-game highs in the program's history.

In total, seven different Fords recorded a goal, with Rina Rosnow, Julia Pascarella, and Maeve Gaffney all picking up hat-tricks in the win. Haverford opened the game on a 7-1 scoring run, with Gibbons grabbing three goals during the push, including a goal on a man-up opportunity. Gibbons tallied her fourth with 16:18 left in the first half, and eventually found the back of the net for the last goal of the half with 2:25 to go, as Haverford took a 12-6 advantage into the intermission.

Christopher Newport got within five at 13-8, but the Fords grew their advantage to 17-8, with Gibbons again finding the back of the net on two occasions, including a free-position goal with 20:45 left in the half. Rosnow converted with 8:45 to play as Haverford's lead reached its apex of nine. 

Amelia Slade picked up her second career win between the pipes, stopping a career-best 10 shots in 56:38 of action before being replaced by first year Sarah Cahn, who made her debut in goal playing the final 3:02.

Gaffney added three draw controls and three caused turnovers to her three goal effort, while Emily Krupnick had a game-best five ground balls. Four Fords added three draw controls on the afternoon. Hailey Morris joined Manetta as the only Fords with multiple assists, recording three. 

Sarah Culver paced Christopher Newport with six goals while Kaitlyn Ready made 11 saves in goal for the Captains. Haverford has now won its season opener for the second straight season.

The Fords face a quick turnaround, doing battle with No. 3 TCNJ on Tuesday afternoon at Swan Field. The opening draw for the contest is slated for 4:30 p.m.
