Van Aken overtime header pushes Fords past Dips

LANCASTER, Pa. – A header by Katie Van Aken skimmed inside the right post early in the overtime period to give the Haverford College women's soccer team a 2-1 Centennial Conference win Sunday evening over host Franklin & Marshall College.

A foul by the Diplomats (5-4-1, 3-3-0 CC) in the third minute of the extra period provided Haverford (7-0-4, 3-0-2) the opportunity for a set piece. Anna Rayne teed up the free kick about 30 yards out and lofted a ball deep into the box where Van Aken was able to beat F&M goalie Amanda McGowan to the ball and head home the game-winner just inside the post.

The game went into the halftime break knotted in a scoreless draw, but Haverford's Meg Boyer broke the tie in the 56th minute with a goal off a rebound from her own shot which McGowan saved but couldn't control.

The Fords owned a 13-4 advantage in shots during regulation play but F&M's last shot ruined what was less than two minutes away from becoming a Haverford celebration. Alexa Yarish scored the equalizer at the 88:06 mark to ruin the party and send the contest into extra time.

The ball never crossed into the Haverford zone in the overtime period as the Fords controlled possession and forced the Dips to foul which led to the winning shot from Van Aken.

The Fords return home for their next outing, Tuesday afternoon at Walton Field against visiting Moravian College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
