Season kicks off with scoreless tie against Arcadia

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The women's soccer season opened Saturday at Walton Field for Haverford College and Arcadia College with the host Fords and visiting Knights battling to a non-conference 0-0 double-overtime draw in the first game of the 2013 Haverford Kickoff Classic.

The Fords (0-0-1) out shot Arcadia (0-0-1) by a 16-8 margin and owned an 8-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities but Knights goalkeeper Jackie Law was able to match Haverford netminder Robin Chernow as the pair each finished with six saves to keep the scoreboard blank.

The opening 45 minutes provided equal opportunities for both offenses. Haverford, though, began to gain momentum in the second half -- getting off seven shots while limiting Arcadia to three -- and maintained the edge into the overtime periods, posting four shots into the book against one for the Knights.

Haverford nearly ended the contest in the early minutes of the second overtime as Jo Haller got off a header only 40 seconds in which Law saved, and Larisa Antonisse forced Law to make another save less than a minute later.

Chernow came to the rescue late in the period with a save off a header from Arcadia's Lennon Kramer in the 108th minute.

The Kickoff Classic continues Sunday at Walton with Haverford squaring off against Stevenson University in a 1 p.m. game followed by the Arcadia-Eastern University match-up at 3:30 p.m. Stevenson downed Eastern 4-0 in Saturday's second game.
