HAVERFORD, Pa. – Forward Meg Boyer's goal towards the end of the opening half pushed Haverford College's women's soccer team to a 1-0 Centennial Conference victory over host Bryn Mawr College on Wednesday afternoon, increasing the Fords' win streak over the Owls to 20 straight.
The 20 consecutive wins by Haverford (6-2-5, 3-0-3 CC) have all come without allowing a Bryn Mawr (1-12, 0-7) goal. The game before the streak began ended in a 0-0 tie in 1993.
Boyer's goal Wednesday came after she had just sent a shot over the crossbar in the 36th minute of action. Only forty seconds later Boyer was able to find the netting in the back of the goal to provide the contest's only score.
It wasn't like Haverford didn't have its chances, though, as it out shot the Owls by a 26-11 margin. The Fords kept Bryn Mawr goalie Aviva Kosansky busy all afternoon.
The opening shot of the game came off of the foot of Haverford's Phoebe Miller and resulted in the first of Kosansky's nine saves on the day. The Fords generated two more shots before the Owls would gain the advantage in their attacking end getting off one shot that sailed wide of the Haverford frame followed by another that netminder Robin Chernow needed to stop.
The next six shots came from the visitors who were swarming in their attacking zone. Bryn Mawr ended the string with a shot over the crossbar and then the Fords were back on the attack again, with Connie Friedman hitting the post at the 27:35 mark.
Two more Kosansky saves and then one from Chernow preceded a goal-saving sweep at the goal line by the Bryn Mawr defenders before Boyer's pair of shots that eventually turned into the game-winning goal.
Second-half action wasn't as lively as in the first, but Haverford still managed to maintain pressure on the Bryn Mawr defense before finally giving up a shot to the home team with less two minutes remaining. Chernow came up with the save to preserve the victory and shutout streak.
Chernow finished with three saves in the win.
Wednesday's victory over the Owls also extended a string of unbeaten games to 10 for Haverford, a stretch that includes six victories and four ties including a 2-2 tie against second-ranked Johns Hopkins University in the game before the match-up against Bryn Mawr.
The Fords travel to McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon for their next league contest then continue conference action on Oct. 23 when they will host Washington College at 4 p.m.
