HAVERFORD, Pa. – Wednesday afternoon's 4-0 Centennial Conference women's soccer win over visiting Washington College extended host Haverford College's unbeaten string to 12 in a row as forward Meg Boyer netted the opening two goals of the game to help lead the Fords past the Shorewomen.
Haverford (8-2-5, 5-0-3 CC) sits in third place within the conference standings while Washington saw its season record fall to 4-9-2 overall and 1-7 in the league.
Boyer's opening marker came in the 14th minute after Washington was unable to clear the ball from deep within its end.
A tipped pass at the top, right of the box from teammate Mariah Baker ended up at Boyer's feet. She split two defenders then dribbled deeper into the box forcing Washington goalkeeper Melissa Barry to come off her line. Boyer crossed a right-footed shot back across Berry and inside the left post to give the home team the early lead.
Eleven minutes later Boyer was the recipient of a perfect cross from Isabella Bertagna to push the lead to two. From just inside the left line of the box Bertagna chipped a soft saucer pass toward the center of the goal box where Boyer easily flicked a header into the right corner behind Barry at the 24:41 mark.
Baker gave the Fords their 3-0 lead on an almost identical play one minute later. Connie Friedman battled with a defender to nearly the same spot as Bertagna's pass and crossed to the far post where Baker one-timed a shot back across a diving Barry into the left side of the goal.
Sophie Eiger made the score 4-0 seven minutes later. Larisa Antonisse's shot from about 20 yards out was saved by Barry but the Shorewomen's netminder wasn't able to maintain possession with the save, allowing the ball to bounce off her chest and right to the feet of a wide-open Eiger at the right post for an easy tap-in.
Haverford rarely allowed the Shorewomen to clear the midline with possession and when Washington did stretch into their attacking end the Haverford defense was able to easily sweep away the few threats that materialized for the visitors.
Robin Chernow started in goal for the Fords and earned the win without needing to come up with a save. Chernow gave way to Kathy Prescott in the 68th minute with Prescott recording a save on a Washington shot from 40 yards out. Barry took the loss for the Shorewomen as she came up with six saves but allowed all four goals.
Haverford's season continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. visit from rival Swarthmore College.
