Newman named player of week in conference soccer

LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior defender Elizabeth Newman of the Haverford College women's soccer team has been named the Centennial Conference's defensive player of the week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

On Senior Day and making her final appearance at Walton Field, Newman spearheaded a defensive effort that limited visiting Ursinus College to just three shots in the contest.

Newman was also in the right place at the right time shortly before halftime against the Bears as her header in the 37th minute was the game's first goal and proved to be the game-winner, her first of the season and just the third game-winning tally of her career.

Haverford closed out the regular season with a 3-0 win over Ursinus and heads into the upcoming Centennial tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Fords square off against third-seed Gettysburg College in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal match-up Friday at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
