Women's Soccer Takes First Game of Year vs. Arcadia, 1-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 win in its own tournament over Arcadia Saturday afternoon. Senior Connie Friedman gave the Fords the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 81st minute of play after over 80 minutes of a scoreless draw.

With the win in the season opener, Haverford (1-0) will move on to play in the championship game of the Haverford College Kickoff Classic Sunday at 1 p.m. against Scranton. Scranton was a 6-0 winner over Eastern in the second game.

Friedman's goal with less than 10 minutes to play in the contest was finished with a header delivered from the foot of freshman Krista Federici. With the cross coming to the left side post, Freidman found that same side corner, sending the Fords to the win. Friedman's goal was the 10th of her career and came while she was in the process of also being pulled down by a defender inside the box.

Haverford's goal came after an increased offensive presence in the second half of the game. In a game played mostly in the midfield during the opening 45 minutes, the two sides combined for just five shots in the opening half.

The Fords began to find some cracks in the Arcadia defense with a total of seven shots during the second half. Friedman's goal ended up being the final shot of the game for either side as the Haverford defense held its own over the course of the full 90 minutes.

In goal, Robin Chernow added to her program leading shutout total. Chernow now has 28.3 shutouts for her career. Today's game marked the third straight season in which Haverford has started the season with a shutout of Arcadia.

The women's soccer program will be looking to wins its sixth Haverford Kickoff Classic title in program history tomorrow. The last time the Fords won their own tournament was during the 2012 season. Tomorrow's championship game with Scranton will begin at 1 p.m.
