Women's Soccer Edged by Dickinson, 2-1

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's soccer team was edged out by Dickinson in its Centennial Conference opener on the road Saturday by a 2-1 final. Dickinson (7-0, 1-0 CC) scored its two goals in the first 17 minutes. Those two goals were also the first goals that the Fords (3-1-1, 0-1 CC) had surrendered all year. Connie Friedman got one of those goals back in the second half, but Haverford was unable to find the equalizer over the final 20 minutes.

The Red Devils scored quickly as Allie Young tallied an unassisted goal just 6:46 into the game, ending the Fords' shutout streak for the season. Her unassisted goal was the sixth of her season. Just under 10 minutes later, Jess Swain found the back of the net for the Red Devils in the 17th minute as she also scored unassisted to put her squad up 2-0.

Total shots (14-13) and shots on goal (10-8) were fairly even despite Dickinson holding a slight edge in both categories. However, that marginal statistical edge did not show up on the scoreboard until the 69th minute when Friedman was able to put the finishing touches on a mad scramble in front of the Dickinson goal.

In addition to being close statistically with Dickinson in terms of total shots, the Fords earned nine corner kicks on the afternoon to hold a commanding edge in that category as they did not allow Dickinson a corner try.

Friedman finished the contest tied for the match high with four shots on the afternoon. Larisa Antonisse added three shots to the Fords' offensive attack, while Ali Lopez and Anna Dekle each took a pair of shots in the contest.

Defensively, Robin Chernow stopped eight shots on the afternoon. Her counterpart, Charlotte Armour, picked up the victory as she stopped seven of the eight shots on goal that she was faced with on the afternoon.

Women's soccer will be back at home this Wednesday for a non-conference match at Lebanon Valley that is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
