Women's Soccer Upended by Ursinus, 2-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. The Haverford College women's soccer team was edged out by Ursinus on the road Wednesday night, 2-1. The Fords (4-4-2, 0-3 CC) got on the board first with a goal from Skyler Ellenburg in the opening half, but two goals from the Bears' (5-4-2, 3-0-2 CC) Alexis Haug in the second half provided the difference. Tonight's contest was the third straight conference meeting for Haverford in which it found itself on the wrong end of a one-goal difference.

Haverford opened the game's scoring in the 34th minute when Ellenburg, a freshman, scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Ellenburg secured possession at the top of the 18 and beat the goalie over the top.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Bears scored twice in the first 19 minutes of the second half to secure the victory. Both of Haug's goals were assisted by Valerie Bedrock.

The game-tying goal came when Haug collected a cross that was knocked right to her feet off a deflection for the finish. The second goal came on a set piece for the Bears in which Haug was able to place a header over top of the Haverford defense for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

The Fords got off three shots after conceding the second goal to Ursinus, but Courtney Sullivan made two of her three saves during that time to record the win. Robin Chernow made five saves in net for Haverford.

Total shots for the game were basically even with the hosts holding a slight 13-12 advantage in that category. Kristin Hasselgren recorded a team-high three shots for the Fords. Jo Haller, Ali Lopez and Ellenburg each recorded two shots on the evening.

Women's soccer will return home this Saturday to host Franklin & Marshall. That Centennial Conference game is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
