Women's Soccer Topped by Muhlenberg, 3-0

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Muhlenberg College used a three-goal blitz in the opening 25 minutes of Tuesday night's Centennial Conference match to notch a 3-0 victory over the Haverford College women's soccer team. Those three goals for the Mules (8-3-2, 4-2 CC) came in a span of just over 11 minutes to down the Fords (5-5-2, 1-4 CC).

The Mules got on the board in the 14th minute when Megan Nehila and Taylor Pini set up a cross into the box that was finished by Colleen Touhey. Touhey's tally was her third goal of the season.

Muhlenberg's next two goals each came following called fouls against Haverford. In the 22nd minute, the Fords were called for a foul in the box. That foul sent Kaitlin Cassidy to take a penalty kick for the Mules. She converted to make the score 2-0. The penalty kick was the first that Haverford witnessed this season on either the offensive or defensive side of the ball. The Mules' third goal came on a free kick from Carly DeNigris. Playing the set piece to the left side of the goal, DeNigris knocked home the direct kick for her second goal of the season.

After being outshot 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes, Haverford played a much more even second half with the Mules holding a 10-8 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes. Raina Fitzpatrick finished with a team-high three shots for the Fords. Dominique Caggiano and Ali Lopez also took two shots for the guests.

In goal, Kathy Prescott made her second consecutive start. The sophomore made six saves over the 90 minutes. Prescott's counterpart, Jen Mermelstein, stopped all three shots on goal that she faced, posting a shutout for Muhlenberg.

Women's soccer will be back on the road this Saturday as the Fords travel to Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins recently moved up to No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. Saturday's match against the nationally-ranked Blue Jays will begin at 1 p.m.
