Women's Soccer Edged by No. 7 Johns Hopkins, 1-0

BALTIMORE – For the fourth time this season, the Haverford College women's soccer team was denied a Centennial Conference result by a single goal as No. 7 Johns Hopkins came up with a 1-0 win on its home turf Saturday afternoon. The nationally-ranked Blue Jays (12-2, 6-0 CC) scored in the 63rd minute to claim the conference win over the Fords (5-6-2, 1-5 CC).

The Haverford defense stood tall throughout the match. Anchored by three saves in the opening half from Kathy Prescott, Haverford was able to hold the game scoreless heading into halftime despite 10 shots from the Blue Jays during that time.

The stifling defense continued in the early minutes of the second half as the Fords blocked another shot and successfully defended two corner kick attempts in the first 15 minutes of the second half. However, the Blue Jays were finally able to find a gap in the Haverford defense during the 63rd minute when Ana Bengoechea found Sydney Teng in stride with the last line of the Haverford defense. Teng was able to send her shot to the left post and in for her seventh goal of the season, giving her squad a 1-0 lead.

Haverford had one last shot in the remaining 27-plus minutes but that attempt from Connie Friedman traveled over the crossbar. The Fords finished with four corner kick attempts and three shots in the game. In addition to Friedman's shot in her return, Kristin Hasselgren recorded the Fords' lone shot on goal of the game in the 13th minute. That attempt came just after Skyler Ellenburg sent a shot wide of net. Prescott finished with four saves in the contest. Prescott's counterpart, Sarah Bennett, picked up the shutout in net.

Women's soccer will return to Walton Field this upcoming week for its final two home contests of the regular season. The first of those two games will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Bryn Mawr. Next Saturday, the Fords will host McDaniel at 1 p.m. That match will serve as Senior Day for the eight members of the graduating senior class.
